Building an Aggressive Prayer Life

Passive prayer produces passive results. If you have been praying the same gentle, routine prayers and seeing little change, something needs to shift — and this article will show you exactly how to start.

There is a version of prayer that most of us grew up with — quiet, polite, orderly. You bow your head, you say your words, you say amen, and you hope for the best. There is nothing wrong with reverence. But if that is the only mode of prayer you have, you are bringing a whisper to a war. The Bible never describes prayer as a polite religious exercise. It describes it as warfare. It describes it as wrestling. It describes it as the mechanism by which the kingdom of God is advanced on earth and by which the plans of the enemy are torn down. That kind of prayer is not quiet. That kind of prayer is aggressive.

"The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." (James 5:16). Every word in that verse matters. Effectual — it works. Fervent — it burns with intensity and passion. Righteous — it comes from a life that is in right standing with God. It does not say the long prayer, or the theological prayer, or the eloquent prayer. It says the fervent prayer. The prayer that is hot. The prayer that means what it says. The prayer that will not stop until something moves. That is the prayer that avails much.

MFM was born in prayer. In 1989, Dr. D.K. Olukoya gathered a small group of believers in his living room — not with a grand ministry plan or a large budget, but with a commitment to pray with an intensity that most churches were not willing to sustain. Out of that first prayer meeting emerged a ministry that today spans over 150 countries, with documented miracles that defy medical and scientific explanation. The foundation of all of it was not strategy, not talent, not funding — it was aggressive, persistent, faith-filled prayer. That DNA is in everything MFM does, including MFM Tampa Florida.

Building an aggressive prayer life begins with understanding what prayer actually is. It is not a religious duty to be checked off a list. It is communication with the Almighty God who holds every atom of the universe in place, and who has invited you — by the blood of Jesus — into His throne room. When you understand that, prayer stops being a chore and becomes a privilege. You stop watching the clock because you are in the presence of Someone who loves you completely and has the power to change everything about your situation.

Practically, here is how to begin. First: set a prayer time and protect it ferociously. The enemy will fill every minute of your day if you do not deliberately carve out time for God. Second: use prayer points — specific, targeted petitions rather than vague generalities. "Lord bless me" is a prayer. "Every power assigned to frustrate my destiny this season, be paralyzed now in the name of Jesus" — that is a prayer point. Be specific. Be direct. Third: pray in the Spirit. Allow the Holy Spirit to pray through you when your natural words run out, when you do not know what to pray, when the situation is too deep for language. Let Him intercede through you.

Many believers carry the same testimony: they started taking their prayer life seriously, and within weeks, things began to shift. Not always in the ways they expected. Sometimes the breakthrough came first in their own heart — a peace that replaced anxiety, a clarity that replaced confusion, a boldness that replaced fear. Sometimes it was external — a door shut for years suddenly opened, a relationship broken for a decade began to heal, a sickness that had defied treatment began to respond. God is not slow. He is waiting for His people to show up with the kind of prayer that means business.

At MFM Tampa Florida, we offer multiple prayer opportunities every week. Our morning prayer line runs from 6:00–7:00 AM EST, Monday through Friday — join by phone and spend the first hour of your day in the presence of God before the world can get to you. Our Friday night revival services, deliverance nights, and crossover programs are all built on extended, aggressive, corporate prayer. There is something that happens when people pray together — with one voice, one focus, one desperate hunger for God — that releases an authority solitary prayer alone cannot match. Come and join us. Let your prayer life be transformed. And watch what God does with a person who simply refuses to stop.
